Chapter 9
“First he got me in the stomach,” Mars told Jonah, after he and Dylan returned to the house. “He was going for my throat with his foot when it finally kicked in it was me, not one of Webb’s people.”
“I think I’m lucky Mars didn’t try to retaliate,” Dylan said. “I’m just a novice at this hand-to-hand stuff.”
“Could have fooled me,” Mars retorted, rubbing his stomach. “I was down and trying to breathe. You pack a hell of a punch.”
Jonah looked as if he was trying not to laugh. “Next time, don’t creep up on him.”
“I wasn’t, damn it. He was too focused on what he was doing to hear me.”
Jonah looked at Dylan. “Not a good thing.”
“I know,” Dylan said, feeling ashamed he’d been so unaware. “Believe me, I’ll remember from now on.”
“What did Ken come up with?” Mars asked as he handed Jonah the SD cards containing the pictures he and Dylan had taken.
“What we need,” Jonah replied as they headed down to the operations room. When they got there, he gave Ken the two cards, asking him to move the information on them to one of the computers so everyone could see what Mars and Dylan had photographed.
After Ken did, he put the pictures up on the big screen, scrolling through them.
“Stop,” Dylan said, when it got to the two he’d taken of the window at the back of the warehouses. “Can you zoom in?”
Ken did, until the image of a man came into focus. The face was blurry, as if the man was turning away, but…
“It could be Webb,” Dylan said hesitantly. “The shape of the face, the age, the crewcut…Yeah, I’m fairly certain it’s him.”
“Bingo,” Mars said. “We have a definitive connection now.”
“Ken, you’re up,” Jonah said.
“All right. I have two different pieces of information. One, National Gun Sales, we’ll call them NGS to make it easier, owns a plane they keep at the airport. It flies out on a regular basis, always during the day. From the flight plans they file, the trips are to deliver merchandise to gun shops around the country. All on the up-and-up.”
“Definitely covering their ass,” Livy commented.
“Exactly,” Ken agreed. “Now for the second bit. You were right, Bart. It took a lot of digging, but I found the link between Webb, or more specifically Zappa, and Security Charter. Zappa owns it, through several layers of holding companies. They seem to be legit on the surface, hiring out as needed for daytime flights. However, three to four times a month, one of the SC planes flies out of the airport sometime after midnight. Always the same plane, and after checking, I found it never files a flight plan, which, before you ask, is legal if they aren’t flying under IFR rules.”
“Instrument flight rules, for those of you who don’t know the lingo,” Livy said with a slight grin. “Are the flights on a specific day?” she asked Ken.
“Not if you mean always on a Monday, or whatever. As far as I’ve tracked it to this point, the flights are ten days apart.
